Asking another witness to unhook the car's battery to ensure the car wouldn't catch on fire, Richards noticed that the seatbelt was pulled tightly around the unconscious driver's neck, preventing him from taking a full breath. Thinking quickly, Richards borrowed a knife from another driver and cut the belt.
