The Last American said...: Good question. I know there have been state supreme court justices who haven't been lawyers (Gideon Cowell, the first Chief Justice of Rhode Island, for one), but I don't know about US supreme court justices.

But I would think that if RFK was qualified to be Attorney General on little more than sharing the same parentage as JFK, then another Presidential appointment such as a Supreme Court vacancy should be equally latitudinous.

Does anyone know if there's been a US Supreme Court justice who wasn't a lawyer?
